Why I believe we’re responsible for our own safety

Shortly after the office of my employer in Cambridge shut down, I had to come in to close out some business. As I’m used to, I went for an afternoon walk around my office, which is right off one of the Red Line stations, which also was now a ghost-town, except for the many homeless and mentally ill wandering around. From 20 feet away I saw two large men looking at me and seemingly making plans, then they split up. I immediately knew what they were up to. 5 feet in front of me there was a somewhat secluded entrance way where one would push me into and the other would pounce on me to rob me…or worse. Whether I carry weapons on my person at all times or not, I knew what I had to do. I reached into my pocket and when they were about 10 feet away, I told them, “Come and get it!”. They were totally surprised at how this chubby, middle-aged, balding sheep had suddenly transformed himself into a wolf. They immediately broke away saying they just wanted some spare change and rapidly moved off. I was cool and ready to engage them at that time, but 10 minutes later in my office, I was still shaking and remained distraught the rest of the day. Let me make this promise: If elected, I will make sure the homeless get the help they need, but I will encourage all citizens to obtain the means to defend themselves and those that are forced to do so will receive the full understanding of our court system and my support.
